PSC hopes to hone more future champions at new gymnastics center

The Philippine Athletic Commission (PSC) looks forward to discovering more world-class gymnasts to follow in the footsteps of Olympian and World Champion Caloy Yulo, as it welcomes the opening of the new Gymnastics Center in Intramuros, Manila Saturday.

“The PSC Board believes in our gymnasts to achieve more in the years to come. That is why we support them as our limited resources could. Last year, Caloy showed the world the true courage of Filipino athletes, fighting and winning despite injuries in another championship. Our collective efforts to grow the sport can produce more Caloys in the future,” said PSC Chairman William “Butch” Ramirez.

Since the arrival of the current administration in 2016, the PSC has given more than Php 71 million to the Philippine Gymnastics Association to cover the expenses of the team’s international competitions, training, equipment, training supplies and other expenses.

This amount is in addition to releases covering the allowances of athletes, coaches and local coaches, which in 2021 alone amounted to 7.9 million pesos. In addition, foreign coaches receive 287,000 pesos per month in salaries and allowances.

PSC spent Php 2.2 million on National Gymnast Training Center rental fees in 2021 and January 2022 alone. The new facility will serve as a training ground for Yulo and other national team members.

Yulo, 22, who is a product of the PSC’s Batang Pinoy and Philippine National Games programs, honed his talent and skills inside the gymnastics center at the historic Rizal Memorial Sports Complex (RMSC) before ultimately become an Olympian and a world-class athlete in the sport.

In his guest on the weekly PSC radio show “PSC Hour” broadcast on Friday on Radyo Pilipinas, the world champion thanked the sports agency for their support, “thankful po ako sa PSC na nandyan po sila sa likod ko Hindi ko po ito all magagawa kung wala po sila Kasama po sila his family, coaches, NSA and sa iba pa po na sumusuporta his relatives Maraming, maraming salamat po.

“We thank Caloy for setting the bar high for Filipino gymnastics. It just proves that hard work is the key to achieving a dream. I hope he inspires more young people to pursue their dreams and will motivate us to further expand our core program,” added Ramirez.
