Last Wednesday evening, The Black Crowes celebrated the release of their EP, 1972, featuring an 80-minute set at the iconic Whiskey a GoGo on West Hollywood’s famous Sunset Strip. In collaboration with Amazon Music, the performance was streamed live on and featured a setlist split between a full rendition of the EP and a mini set of Crowes classics. Opening with The Rolling Stones’ “Rocks Off,” the 8-piece band, fronted by brothers Chris and Rich Robinson, charged through the EP’s six cuts. With Blackberry Smoke’s Charlie Starr guesting on guitar throughout the night, the Crowes rocked T-Rex’s “The Slider” and Rod Stewart’s “You Wear It Well,” stopping to note Little Feat’s appearance on places this date 50 years earlier as Rich led a version of “Easy to Slip” from Feat. The band closed out the EP portion with David Bowie’s “Moonage Daydream” and The Temptations’ “Papa Was a Rolling Stone,” then kicked off their own bookend set with “Thorn in My Pride.” Touching on the highlights of the revered band’s 30-year catalog, Crowes’ series of half a dozen nuggets included “She Talks to Angels”, “Wiser Time” and a final “Remedy”.
